Gallery
The gallery offers an international program of contemporary art. It sells special works by artists, who through their art, show a strong interest in how our environment is formed and perceived, its stories and its myths. Most of the artists represented by the gallery express their challenging ideas through an innovative use of the mediums of film and photography as well as through performances and installations.
Space
The gallery is housed in the middle of Rotterdam’s magnificent Groot Handelsgebouw (formerly a ‘wholesale trade building’), which was renovated in 2007. The Groot Handelsgebouw, which was designed just after World War II by the notorious Dutch modernist architect, Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977), is Rotterdam’s largest and most daringly designed building. Indeed, the Groot Handelsgebouw is a city within a city and features all kinds of facilities, including shops, bars, convention centres, and a cinema. It also flaunts a large summer terrace, which measures 7000 m² and is located on the roof, offering panoramic views of Rotterdam. Maaskant designed many remarkable buildings in Rotterdam during the early post-war era. Recently this particular building was declared a national monument.
